no easy wins

24/01/26

my focus this year is to avoid "easy wins". i arrived at it kind of ass-backwards, reverse engineering from the two issues i wanted to tackle: a habit of mindless shopping and losing a lot of time to easy entertainment such as youtube and gaming. i phrased the goals something like "enjoy my stuff more" (to give it a positive spin) and "projects over distractions" (where the definition of project is very broad - finish reading a book, spin three balls of yarn etc).

the wins:

the fails:

i still get quite trapped by youtube. i'll legitimately put something on in the background of another activity then suddenly it's hours later, the activity only lasted 20 minutes, but the videos kept going. i think i'm going to try one of those "de-stimulate yourself" approaches of doing one thing at a time. like, no background noise. if i want to watch or listen it'll have to be with Engagement. there definitely have been "grappling with boredom" moments but that's to be expected and i think when i Notice it, i handle it pretty well. letting myself stay there, daydream, plan, let things come to me.

considering making a curated video list based on my interests? sit down once a week to pre-select things to watch? i'm not sure. i do sometimes click on a suggested next video but mostly it's just a habit. it's my basic online activity - opening youtube. maybe that's something to focus on first.
